The Root of Adultery

“Oh, be careful little eyes what you see.”

The eyes are the pathway to the heart. To guard your eyes is to guard your heart.

In his most famous sermon, The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus tells the truth about the Kingdom of God. He challenges the popular narrative
of his day about almost every area of life. Today, Jesus tells us about the root of the sin of adultery, how it begins and how to prevent it.  

GOD’s Story— The Root of Adultery— Matthew 5:27-30  

The 7th Commandment, Exodus 20:14 (27)  Why did God forbid adultery? Why is it so destructive? Matthew 19:3-6

Lustful eyes feed lustful flesh (28)    
Matthew 6:22-23; Galatians 6:7-8
Are you feeding your flesh, or are you feeding your spirit?

So, what is Jesus’ solution to the look, the lustful gaze?
Remove what enables and causes lust! (29-30)
What causes you to lust? James 1:14-15
Cause = Evil Desire.
Process: Desire conceives, Sin is born, Sin grows, & Sin bears death.
Enable = to make able, empower, supply w/means to do______.
Don’t be an enabler!Stumbling Block = anything that causes or enables someone to sin.
We are mutually responsible to each other in this area. Romans 14:12-13

BIG Idea:         Lord, purge us of the desires of our flesh. Give us self-control. the fruit of your Spirit within us. We release to you what causes us to stumble.
